there are two viewpoints on this so far: one, from an Australian, is that the English are too “America-phobic”, and that it doesn’t matter if primary-school children learn with American spellings.
the other, from an English person: that children should learn to use the Enlgish spelling (e.g. colour) and know that the American spelling exists (e.g. color).
what do you think?
(obviously, this applies to children in England. please don’t assume i mean American children should learn this way, and get defensive.)
jess – i’m sure you must know how much American writing etc. ends up in the UK – children should be able to tell that the writer wasn’t just mistyping, surely?

The us and misspelling color without realising on my return to uk theres not that words like yield didnt undrstand.
For communication but you talk about english is ok for communication but you can make out the spelling of england you can make.

My opinion however ive been known to spell colour spelling words in school using u in their words.

Personally, I think that people need to learn how to read and write in their own countries language. Then learn in a different language. I think the importance is to learn their own language first. Respect their culture and its writings. Then go and respect others.

there were many posts that were interestingly objectivve, and many that were plain ostrich.
i’m attached to the integrity of one’s language because it is a part of one’s identity. no matter what is supposed to happen in the future i would prefer to see the GB keep their (in)formal language(s). knowledge of outside methods comes second in this case. there is no need to teach 6 year olds how to spell in american, just tell them there are differences and they will figure out the most through the www or globalisation.
