Hawi asked:

I come from Taiwan and am now good at using daily English and understanding most of the words in newspapers, magazines and books. However, I know that students take literature courses since grade 7, and they soon percieve American spirit by keeping reading literature. well….the words in use in some literature are easy, but still, I couldn’t understand the meanings outside of the contexts. If you have any suggestions, or just want to share your learning experience, feel free to answer my question. thank you!

kleptomanic sheep asked:

there are two viewpoints on this so far: one, from an Australian, is that the English are too “America-phobic”, and that it doesn’t matter if primary-school children learn with American spellings.
the other, from an English person: that children should learn to use the Enlgish spelling (e.g. colour) and know that the American spelling exists (e.g. color).

what do you think?

(obviously, this applies to children in England. please don’t assume i mean American children should learn this way, and get defensive.)
jess – i’m sure you must know how much American writing etc. ends up in the UK – children should be able to tell that the writer wasn’t just mistyping, surely?
hey guys, i did say children in England. i don’t care how Americans learn to spell. but should children in *England* learn to spell English first,a dn then later learn that Americans spell it differently?
